Modular phones by Google to be available next year

On the final day of Google’s annual developer’s conference in Mountain View in Silicon Valley, the company announced that Project Ara was on the move and not shelved as per speculations earlier.  According to reports, those developers who are interested in creating apps for the devices will receive early versions of Ara. Ara provides a frame in which modules such as cameras, speakers, and sensors can be re-arranged by users like game pieces so as to customise handsets. The company also announced that a consumer version of Ara will be available next year.

The first prototype of Ara was released at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona last year. At that time, Google had said that it hoped that this new approach would provide easier access to smartphones for people in developing countries.

The basic structures of the project are designed to hold screen modules, batteries, cameras, sensors, 3G, Wi-fi or other components snapped into place with the help of magnets. So, if the user needs to update the model of his phone, or buy a new phone, he could simply swap out components instead of buying a whole new handset.
