NEET to get deferred by the centre

Posted on: 18/May/2016 4:42:35 PM
The common entrance exam for medical and dental courses – NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is likely to get deferred as the centre has issued an ordinance. This deferment will be applicable for the ongoing academic year.

However, those applying for institutions belonging to central government or private management institutions under management quota will have to take up the examination.

This decision by the centre is taken following the plea to consider the enormous stress imposed on students thinking of the exams they will face. There were two rounds of serious discussions during the meeting held to build consensus before planning the Ordinance.

Firstly, there was a meeting by the Union Health Minister JP Nadda with the health ministers of about 14 states. This was followed by one more meeting between congress leaders, INLD, left and PDP and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

For the first phase of NEET, about 6.5 lakh students have sat and this was held on 1st May. The next schedule of exam is on 24th July.

According to orders by the Supreme court last month, students must take up just one common entrance test which is the NEET. This is for getting into medical colleges. This move was taken as there were a number of complaints received about different examinations conducted in each and every state governments and private medical colleges.

However, following the court’s order, many states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have requested for deferring the single common entrance test by one year.
