Tuesday was the wettest day in May in six years for Chennai. The city recorded 12.7 cm of rainfall in Nungambakkam. In 2010, the Cyclone Laila which hit the city, brought 19 cm of rainfall on May 19th and 20th of that year. On May 20, Chennai received 10.9 cm of rainfall compared to Tuesday’s 12.7 cms.
The second consecutive day of intermittent showers disrupted normal life in the city and its northern districts. Many were reminded of the December deluge as there were cases of water logging. The Regional Meteorological Department has asked people stay indoors warning of more heavy rain to come.
District Collectors were instructed by the State Government to monitor the impact of rains. They were also told to have a dedicated control room, which was opened at the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration. An official state government release said, Those who wish to register rain related complaints can contact State helpline number 1070 and Chennai residents can contact 1913 to register complaints.
More rains have been predicted by the Met Department. The depression in the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a deep depression, they say. A senior official from the Department has said, the forecast is intense rains of more than 25 cm in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai districts. Northern Tamil Nadu districts including Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur and Pudukottai will experience over 12 cm of rainfall.
