State governments to provide status report to AICTE

Posted on: 11/May/2016 5:35:28 PM
The AICTE or the All India Council for technical Education has written two letters to State governments that ask them to provide a status report that will help them assess the implementation of the Justice Srikrishna Committee’s recommendations on college fees.

Speaking about this, a senior member of the Council said, We have sent a letter and a reminder to the State governments and are awaiting their response. We may have to hold a meeting with Higher Education Secretaries through video conference when they come for discussion on matters relating to Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.

The Committee’s report prescribed guidelines for charging tuition and other fees for professional courses. The report was tabled last year. In the report, the upper limit for the fees was fixed at Rs. 1.50 lakh for engineering colleges. As many as 100 colleges were closed down across the country. However, 200 new colleges have been added this year.

Said the AICTE official, The council expects that of the 16,90,000 seats approximately, one lakh seats would cease to exist. The council is trying to implement some schemes to improve the quality of teachers and students. Bright students who pursue master’s programme are being motivated to take up teaching by giving them incentives. Students who take up Ph. D. are given top up in their scholarships, ensuring that they not only become good teachers but remain in the profession. Adjunct faculty, sometimes drawn from industry, could also be used tide over the shortage of teachers. Such faculty would come twice a week to run a course with a lot of practical applications, where half or three-fourths course is taught by the adjunct teacher and the rest by the teachers in the institution. As the faculty from the institution will be a coordinator, he will capture the essence of the subject and translate it to the students. That way, both will benefit.
