Due to the direct impact of the scorching summer, the water levels in the reservoirs supplying water to the Chennai has been reducing quite rapidly.

In the last one month alone, the level has gone down by 1345 million cft.
The water level in the Poondi reservoir stood at 1906 million cft as on 2nd April. After a month, it has gone down by 716 million cft and now stands at 1190 million cft.

Similarly, the water level in Cholvaram reservoir has gone down from 248 million cft to 113 million cft. Puzhal lake water level has gone down from 2331 million cft to 871 million cft. Chembarambakkam reservoir water level has gone down from 2362 million cft to 2328 million cft.

When all 4 reservoirs are taken together, the reduction works out to be 1345 million cft.

The hottest part of the summer, known as Agni Nakshatram, is set to start tomorrow (Wednesday, 4th May) and will continue till 28th May. So, it is expected that the fall in reservoir water levels will be even more rapid.

When an MWSSB official was enquired bout whether there will be water shortages, he explained that as on 2nd May last year, the combined water level in the 4 reservoirs was 2328 million cft. As on today, it is 5502 million cft. So, the quantity of water in stock is more than sufficient to meet the summer needs. Hence, there are no prospects of water shortage in Chennai.
