On the first day of general counselling for MBBS admissions for academic year 2011-12, a total of 350 seats were taken and the cut-off mark still hovered at 199.25.

With a total of 350 seats going to candidates who turned up for counselling out of the total of 1,653 available under the State quota, the last student who managed a medical seat in the government college had a score of 199.25.

Experts said that they feared all along that this would happen, and that even students with 195 marks in the core areas might find it difficult to enter the medical stream.

The top 10 rankers, according to the rank list drawn up by the Selection Committee, all preferred seats at the Madras Medical College. Health Minister V.S. Vijay handed over their letters of admission on Friday morning.
