Vegetable prices may go up

Lorry owners have planned to increase the rental rates up to Rs. 200 per tonne due to the recent increase in tollgate-tax and the price of diesel. This may lead to the prospects of price rise of vegetables.
The central government has granted permission for the National Highway Authority to revise the toll taxes by 15 percent more every year and the oil corporations to revise their prices as per the prevailing market conditions.
As per this, the increase in tollgate tax has come into effect from 1st April. Diesel, which was sold at Rs. 45,33 per litre as on 1st February, is currently sold at Rs. 49.09 per litre.
Lorry owners have been protesting and informing that these 2 revisions will only affect the public.
The lorry owners have planned to increase the rental rate for the freights.One of the lorry owners informed that the lorries carry from Krishnagiri, Gudiyatham, and Vellore to Chennai. When returning, they carry whatever freight is available. The lorries ply a daily distance of over 200 km. They have to cross at least 3 tollgates twice during a day.This is an additional expense. Also, the price of diesel has been revised 5 times during the last 2 months.
So, it is planned to increase the rental rates up to Rs. 200 per ton of vegetable. A decision will be taken during the shortly scheduled meeting of the Lorry Owners Association.
Koyambedu Tomato Traders Association President Mr. M. Thiagarajan informed that the lorry owners cannot bear the additional expenses thrust by the central government. Several families need to survive in this business. So, the decision of the Lorry Owners is reasonable. When they raise the rent, naturaly, the price of the vegetables will also go up
