TN government reviews the possibility for reducing metro rail ticket price

Posted on: 04/Apr/2016 5:57:16 PM
Chennai Metro Rail authorities have been demanding that Tamil Nadu government should provide electrical energy at subsidised rates. The state government has been reviewing this request.

Chennai Metro Rail Project, covering 2 tracks for a total distance of 45 km is in progress.

During the 1st stage, metro service between Alandur & Koyambedu is in operation. After the recent heavy rains, the public utility of Metro services has increased. The total number of passengers using Metro has gone up from 7000 to 12000. In this scenario, the public has been demanding reduction in the fare of metro tickets.

The Metro officials explained in this regard that metro is now operating between Alandur & Koyambedu. We are able to recover only 50 percent of the operating costs on a daily basis. The electrical energy required for the operation of the trains, air-conditioners, lifts, and the railway stations is quite high. Apart from this, expenses are incurred for the payment of salary of employees and maintenance.

In another 3 months, it is expected that operation between Chinnamalai & Airport & St. Thomas Mount will be operated. It is planned to introduce additional services in a gradual manner.

The public, meanwhile, have been complaining about high ticket fares.

So, we have requested the state government to provide electricity at subsidised rates. The government is reviewing the same and a decision will be taken soon.
