Watermelons arrive in the market announcing summer

Watermelons have started arriving in loads in the city for a week now, indicating the onset of summer. Chennai receives its share of the luscious fruit from Tindivanam and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu and Cuddapah region in Andhra Pradesh.
The Koyambedu wholesale fruit complex is now getting 50 truckloads of water melons every day. Traders note that the number of truckloads will triple to 150 tonnes by March and more water melons will start arriving too by next month.
Further, the trucks will also deliver watermelons to roadside shops across the city. At present, one kg of watermelon is sold for a rate of up to Rs.15. Though several hybrid varieties with pulp in different colors are available in the city, many customers still prefer the traditional red-pulp variety.
