Online property tax self assessment suspended

Posted on: 17/Feb/2016 11:16:30 AM
The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that it has suspended the system of allowing residents in the city to assess their own property tax. The Corporation has said that many applicants have failed to provide the right dimensions of their properties, and thus give a skewed assessment of tax. Tax assessment orders will be issued only after field inspection of the property is completed.

Last year, the Council started the initiative that allowed the tax payer to to assess the property and pay tax online within a few minutes of submitting the request. So far, more than 8000 buildings have been assessed this way. The data for tax was collected by residents with the help of licensed surveyors who measures their buildings - whether residential or commercial. This data was then fed online for self assessment.

The Corporation has suspended the initiative claiming that this data was wrongly fed into the system by many taxpayers.
