Linking drainage systems could lead to better water management

Experts have said that blocked drains with garbage can be one of the most crucial factors addressing water management, and could contribute to water scarcity.

Speaking in Chennai, a senior professor from IIT Kanpur said, Interlinking of drain systems is more important than interlinking of rivers. Society has turned its back on the drainage system. We should focus on attending to the problems associated with it. Government authorities too should actively take up the issue. Sewage treatment should be decentralized instead of carrying out treatment in a plant miles away from the city. Cities must invest more in treating waste water rather than importing fresh water as it is cheaper to treat water instead of buying it.

According to him, the availability of water per person per year has reduced to around 1,700 liters. It was about 5,000 liters a few decades ago.

To increase water availability in proportion to the population increase, recycling is the way ahead. Not more than 20 % of waste water is treated in most cities. Metros fare better, but in rural areas there is hardly any treatment process, he said.
