TRAI makes recommendations for better VoIP calls

Posted on: 16/Feb/2016 5:49:45 PM
TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) will set inter connection charges for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls. This step will be taken up once the DoT (Department of Telecom) amends the relevant clause of the Unified Licence framework.

In a recommendation, TRAI said that amending the licence provision for inter connection at the IP level would facilitate VoIP calls. Currently, telecom companies need to pat inter connection charges when subscribers make calls between networks. The charge is passed on to the subscriber in the final price.

A TRAI official said, How can we determine charges till the time licence is not amended? When this licence condition is accepted. we will determine the inter-connection charges for the IP-based network. TRAI has only recommended amending, and not regulating the licence provision. It`s TRAI`s domain to determine charges. However, till the time DoT accepts the proposition, we can`t determine the charges. Since IP-based networks continue to proliferate and traditional circuit switch networks are gradually being phased out, there exists the need to facilitate inter-connection.
