Corporation of Chennai will open 31 Amma canteens today

Corporation of Chennai will open 31 more Amma canteens on Friday .This will take the total number of canteens to 283.The Amma canteen is one of the most victorious social welfare schemes of the AIADMK government which is in an election year.
The authors say there has been a drop in overall sales at the canteens because of shortage of staff. Nearly 3,200 people were working in 207 Amma canteens, but the number of workers was not enlarged yet though the number of canteens was increased to 252.As the number of canteens now reaches 283, there has been no move to hire additional workers.
Corporation officials said they stopped the recruitment of workers for Amma canteens later than an audit found that canteens had more staff than required. An official said, Each canteen has 12 to 16 workers, but the ones in government hospitals require more workers since of the huge demand. Now we may have to rearrange the existing workers to new canteens because of the shortage.
The civic body`s has previously plans to farm out operations to NGOs and get fiscal assistance from corporate social liability funds of private firms are yet to take off. This is mainly because of the delay in getting permission from the state government as the ruling party does not want to hand over such operation to private players. To run the canteens, the corporation every year spends an average of 90 crore, an expense that increases each year, forcing the civic body to cut down on various infrastructure projects. However the canteens are popular, the corporation is finding it hard to manage them.
