Travelers prefer mobile to toothbrush, study

According to a new study, travelers in India consider smartphones to be their most indispensable travel companion, more than their need for a toothbrush, deodorant or other essentials while planning a trip.

A study was conducted on mobile-device related behavior and the choices of travelers across North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. This discovered the ways in which a mobile device can largely better the quality of entire travel itself.

It was an online study conducted by travel website expedia.com; it was made by a consulting firm called Northstar. This sought inputs from about 9642 travelers present across 19 countries and found that leisure travelers mostly use mobile devices for navigation, capturing photos, or to stay in touch with their loved ones through social media.

Aman Bhutani, the president of Brand Expedia Group said travelers use their mobile device at various stages of travel right from researching, booking their trip, taking pictures, communicating, sharing their travel experience and lot more.

Further, they are also able to get access to work email and stay connected with their office and hence the gadget helps enhance the overall quality of their vacation.

Such heavy reliance on mobile phone is not applicable with all the countries. About 94 percent users in China and Taiwan, and 91 percent in Thailand consider mobile devices a key companion for their travel. Those from Germany, Norway and Sweden are less reliant to these devices, the study adds.

Bhutani added that they continuously receive the features and habits they like and don`t like and the habits. We constantly receive it and keep making modifications for catering to the mobile-savvy travelers demand.

Nearly 60 percent of travelers who catch up with their office works during a vacation say their travel partner or spouse do not bothered about their mobile usage. However one fifth of Indians say their partners get annoyed.

Business travelers make use of mobile device to remain connected with their home office. Nearly one half of employed travelers check out their business or work updates at least once in a day.

Mobile device is a need for business trips, but there are changes with business travel and connectivity, according to Rob Greyber, president of Egencia.

There are several apps that offer seamless experience for increasing productivity and efficiency in users. Travelers make use of the same for prioritizing their work-life balance and get disconnected whenever possible.
