Nearly 100 crore people out of the total population of 125 crore in India have got mobile phones of their own. In the ongoing year, the total number of internet users is likely to reach 50 crores. At present, there are 40 crore users. The same is likely to surge to 50 crore in another 5 to 8 months, according to Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Telecom Minister.

According to the estimate by the ministry, nearly 70 percent of this population will use internet via mobile phones, he added, while addressing an Indore Management Association function. He also pointed that over 100 crore Indians out of the total 125 crore have got a mobile phone. There are 20 to 30 lakh new users added every month.

The Narendra Modi led government is aiming at awakening the efficiency and innovation in the public. Better governance and developments are targeted with continual simplification of policies and procedures.

Prasad added that while the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee was known for making incredible improvements in the construction of national highways, the present government will be known for information highways.

The minister also said that so far there are 95 crore Aadhar card holders in India. Aadhar is made compulsory for obtaining the benefits of various government schemes.

On receiving the nod from the Supreme Court, Aadhar card will be made mandatory for each and every scheme by the government. Over 2.5 lakh gram panchayats are targeted to get connected through optical fiber network and the government is devising plans for the same.

Once this becomes a reality, it will then be possible for beginning with projects like e-business, e-education, e-health and similar others in villages as well.
