The launch of the free rice scheme in Tamil Nadu by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa under the Public Distribution Scheme (PDS) will take place at three outlets of TUCS in Sriram Nagar, Alwarpet, Chennai today.
The cards under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, 35 kg rice would be distributed a month free of cost to the people who live under below poverty line. A total of 18.62 lakh families would benefit. The civil supplies corporation officials said people need not rush to get the rice on the first day itself. �The rice will be distributed throughout the month. The people should bring their family cards to receive the free rice. The rice bags would be supplied to shops based on the off-take,� said the official.
�Free rice would be distributed on all the working days. Cardholders can call the State Consumers helpline 044-2859 2828 to express their grievances or complaints. Besides, special consumer cells are formed at Collector`s office with a separate telephone number,� said Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Commissioner, K. Balachandran.
