CM asks Centre to withdraw increased excise duty on fuel

Posted on: 17/Jan/2016 6:39:20 PM
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha has asked the Centre to withdraw the revised excise duty on petrol and diesel immediately.  She has said that the duty was unacceptable as it was unjust.

The Centre has, over the last year or so, increased the excise duty on petrol by Rs. 10.77 and on diesel by Rs. 12.7 per litre.

Ms. Jayalalitha has said that the reduced prices of fuel on January 1 of this year was for namesake as the excise duty had been hiked anyway. In an official statement, she said, The government’s increase of excise duty on petrol and diesel is not just. It is not acceptable to anyone. Had the BJP-led NDA government not increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel since November 2014, the prices of petrol and diesel would have reduced by Rs 10-12. (We are) seeking withdrawal of the revision in excise duty... The benefit had not passed on to the common man and the prices of petrol and diesel in India were still high.
