Military personnel exposed to repeated blasts suffer brain damage, says study

According to a study, soldiers who are exposed to blasts in a war zone repeatedly suffer from permanent damage. The study, that was conducted by researchers at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and the University of Washington, was published in the journal Science Transitional Medicine.

The study says that the exposure to repeated blasts causes damage to the part of the brain that works on emotional stability. The experts say that concussions or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a signature injury of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. very many military personnel have been diagnosed with mTBI and PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder.

Researchers conducted studies on mice and found that those exposed to repeated, mild blasts lost neurons in the same brain regions. A similar pattern of loss has been documented in retired boxers, going back several decades... Problems with mood, irritability, and impulsivity are very common in our mTBI veterans. These findings suggest we should pay more attention to how mTBI affects the cerebellum if we want to fully understand the emotional difficulties experienced by veterans with mTBI, they say.
