Annual Pongal Bird Count to be held this weekend

Posted on: 17/Jan/2016 1:06:53 PM
The Pongal Bird Count will be held from January 15 to 18. The annual event is held to document bird life in different parts of Tamil Nadu. The event is an effort to document birds and make bird watching more popular. It is conducted every year by the Tamil Birders Network and the Bird Count India.

Says one of the organisers, Students and other bird watchers have been appraised about bird listing on eBird (ebird.orgcontentindia) and have been given training to identify birds in the first and second weeks of January .They will be in action in various parts of the state from Friday onwards... At least 85 birders from 29 districts participated and uploaded 329 checklists in last year`s Pongal bird count. Most checklists were submitted only from a few districts such as Thoothukudi, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Coimbatore and Pondicherry . The participation from the rest of the districts was low, and there were no lists from Vellore, Ariyalur, Karur, and Nagapattinam. We hope to get an impressive list this time... One can document bird species and count their numbers for at least 15 minutes each day and upload the observations onto eBird and submit the species list... The exercise will help understand the distribution of a particular bird. Recently , the blue and white flycatcher, a bird mostly found in East Asia, was spotted in the Nilgiri hills. It was a rare sight. We are expecting such surprise migratory birds this time too.

Help on how to prepare bird checklists are available on eBird, say the organisers. Resource materials on how to prepare bird checklists in eBird, an online pictorial guide to common birds of Tamil Nadu and an introduction to birds and birdwatching are available.
