Pongal festival: A bundle of sugarcane costs Rs 500

If one thinks of Pongal, only the sugarcane will come into memory. On occasion of Pongal festival, tonnes of sugarcane will be transported to Chennai Koyambedu from Cuddalore, Madurai and Salem for sales.
Retail merchants from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram Districts will procure sugarcanes from this wholesale market. Since Pongal festival is coming close, sugarcanes have started coming to market. Yesterday 150 tonnes of sugarcanes were brought in 10 Lorries.
From last 8th, 450 tonnes of sugarcanes were brought to Koyambedu market. A bundle consisting of 15 to 20 sugarcanes are being sold between Rs 300 to Rs 500 according to the quality. Last year on the first day of sales 750 tonnes of sugarcanes were brought.
While compared to last year, the inflow of sugarcanes is very less this year. Because of this there are chances of prices going high. The merchants have a feeling that a bundle of sugarcane might be sold for Rs 600 to Rs 800.
A sugarcane merchant Rajiv Gandhi while speaking said, Due to the heavy rains in Cuddalore Districts, the cultivation of sugarcane was very badly affected. Moreover, the Government acquires directly from the farmers for the Pongal Gift Pack. Because of this, there is less inflow of sugarcane to Koyambedu market. Last year a bundle of sugarcane was sold for Rs 200- Rs 300. This year, since there is less supply of sugarcane, the bundle is likely to be sold for Rs 800 per bundle.
