King Tirumalai Naicker’s birthday to be celebrated every year from this year

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha has said that the birth anniversary of King Tirumalai Naicker will be celebrated throughout the State starting from this year. The King was a ruler of Madurai in the 17th century.
Ms. Jayalalitha said that the event will be held grandly at Madurai on Thaipoosam Day which falls on January 24. The King was born on Thaipoosam in 1584. The Chief Minister said that King Naicker made Madurai known for its culture. During his reign, he built many temples, mandapams and raja gopurams. In an official statement, Ms. Jayalalitha said, To honour Tirumalai Naicker, his birth anniversary would be celebrated on the coming Thaipoosam day (January 24) at Madurai.
