Deadline extended for surrendering hand-written passports

The regional Passport Officer, Chennai has informed that the deadline for exchanging the old hand-written passports with new ones has been extended till 8th February.

Earlier, the International Air Transport Association had announced that all hand-written passports had to be surrendered for exchange with new passports. The original deadline was set as 24th November after which they will not be valid.

It was announced that if the persons with hand-written passports apply for new ones, the request may be rejected. There may also be some hazards to be encountered while travelling abroad.

In this situation, the external Affairs Ministry of the central government has now given extension for this deadline till 8th February to surrender the old hand-written passports and exchange for new ones.

On this issue, a Chennai Region Passport Officer informed that the Chennai regional Passport Office is fully geared up to exchange these old hand-written passports for new ones.

It has also been advised to the passport holders that the validity period of the passport should not be less than 6 months when they undertake the travel abroad.

Similarly, the passports which are valid for 20 years can be exchanged with new ones which are valid for 10 years.

For those who travel abroad frequently, there is a new facility to exchange their passports with new Jumbo passports which have 64 pages.

The public can apply for Tatkal passport only when they undertake travel abroad for medical treatment or any emergency duty.
