Groundwater levels up after the recent Northesast Monsoon

Chennai MWSSB (Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board has been monitoring the 145 wells chosen for the records of groundwater level, check on the water salinity, etc.

After the recent incessant rainfalls during the recently concluded Northeast Monsoon, groundwater level has increased from 2.10 metres to 10.5 metres.

Groundwater level has risen by over 5 metres in certain areas of Chennai Metro city including Puzhal, Parry`s Corner, Ambattur, Balaji Nagar, Ayanavaram, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar (West), Koyambedu, West Mambalam, Saidapet, and St, Thomas Mount.

In other areas, groundwater level is up by 2.0 metres to 5.0 metres.

Groundwater levels in metres in various parts of the city (old levels in brackets):

Puzhal 6.10 (0.10), Thiruvotriyur 7.75 (4.20), Tondiarpet 6.30 (3.10), Parry`s Corner 8.65 (0.60), Korattur 4.30 (0.30), Ambattur (Balaji Nagar 10.60 (0.10), Ayanavaram 10.80 (5.50), Villivakkam 6.05 (1.0), Anna Nagar West 5.80 (0.70), and Koyambedu 5.90 (0.60)

Chepauk 4.35 (1.15), Nungambakkam 5.40 (0.55), West Mambalam 6.50 (0.50), Saidapet 7.60 (0.20), Chinnamalai 7.60 (0.20), St, Thomas Mount 6,50 (1.30), Kotturpuram 3.50 (0.60), Mandavelli 3.25 (1.15), Besant Nagar 5.22 (0.65), and Pallikkaranai 5.50 (1.1).
Also, the water salinity has been reduced greatly.
