New software to track unclaimed/ un-cleared cargo lying idle at various warehouses in its limit was launched for Chennai Customs Zone on Jan 5.

Ms Vanaja N Sarna, IRS, Member (P&V), Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), launched the software, being developed by the National Association of Container Freight Stations (NACFS) Chennai Chapter, in the presence of Mr S Ramesh, IRS, Chief Commissioner of Customs (Chennai Zone), Mr P K Das, IRS, Customs Preventive, Trichy, and Mr M S Arun, Chairman (Chennai Chapter), NACFS, at a function held in the premises of Chennai Customs.

The online tracking and monitoring software for unclaimed/ un-cleared cargo (UCC), which has been launched on a trial basis in Chennai Customs Zone, is expected to reduce congestion in port/CFS/ICD by speedy disposal of UCC. Besides, the online system is expected to identify and dispose off perishable cargo on priority.

Giving a demonstration of the new software before the august gathering, Mr M S Arun, Chairman (NACFS-Chennai Chapter) said that the online product has been designed in such a way that it could facilitate the whole process without the support of any paper work.

Explaining about the pool-proof mechanism used in the online system, Mr Arun said that the role of CFSs ends literally after entering all the details needed about the unclaimed/un-cleared cargo and the Customs officials dealing with the subject could grasp the information in almost a real-time manner.

Mr Arun expressed hope that the new software could come handy in disposing off UCC issues in shortest possible times and also help the CFSs to keep their areas free of UCC.

He also made a presentation on the proposed RFID-enabled systems to track movement of trucks from CFS to Port and vice versa.

In her keynote address, Ms Vanaja S Sarna congratulated the Chennai Customs Zone for being a pioneer in such online software for UCC in the country.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Mr P K Das, IRS, Customs Preventive, Trichy.
