Temple dress code comes into effect, temples lenient on New Years Day

The dress code for devotees visiting temples came into effect on New Years Day. The Madras High Court had recently directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department (HR & CE) to implement the code at temples across the State. On Friday, several temples had displayed signboards that announced the start of the practice. However, they were lenient on the first day.
According to sources, temples felt it was not ok to hurt the sentiments of people wanting darshan on New Years Day. Instead, those who were improperly dressed were advised against it in the future. The code will, henceforth, be implemented strictly. Many young men and women who learnt about the new order when they reached the temples opted to stay out. In some cases, temple officials persuaded them to enter but adhere to the code from their next visit.
The Madras High Court order states that men and boys should wear dhoti, shirt, pyjama or pants with a shirt. Women and girls must wear sari, churidar or half sari. Lungis, shorts, jeans and tight leggings are not allowed.
