Waterlogged localities despite stoppage of rain

Posted on: 29/Dec/2015 4:43:34 PM
Ever since the beginning of heavy shows in Chennai in November, most area in the city experiencing trouble due to water stagnation, particularly in areas that do not have necessary arrangements for drainage system. This has increased the trouble of mosquito menace.

Speaking about this, Puthagaram residents complaint that they have been suffering with fever and frequent infections in the recent days. There are over ten vacant plots in the colony. Earlier, the water level was 6 foot deep and now it has reduced to 4 foot, says Anand, a local resident. There prevails a similar situation in Palkalai Nagar in Palavakkam where there are unused lands found in between houses. We have not opened the windows in the past two months, says Jeyanthi, a local resident. A lot of garbage enters the home along with this water. The corporation removed it just a week ago, but nothing is so far done to pump the water out, she adds.

The interior of roads are dug in order to create pathway for the water to get drained and find its way to beach; however water that is stagnant on empty plots remain empty, as it is! The metro water and corporation officials are in the conception that localities along the East Coast Road would be cleared now as the soil here has got absorbent nature.

However, due to incessant rain showers, the water table has got shallow and the excess water is unable to get percolated. Contrary to this, in places like Manali, the people are suffering with perennial problems. Corporation workers have drained the water. We are mostly affected each and every year. This year, the corporation has taken efforts to clear the water and brought the condition to normalcy, said a resident of TNHB Colony.
