Most streetlights in the city are back in form

All the 40,000 lights, poles and cables that were ravaged during the recent flood are restored by the Chennai Corporation at a cost of Rs 14 crore.
One of the senior officials from the city corporation said all the damaged lights are restored on main roads. Nearly 2 to 3 percent of damaged lights in the interiors are pending for replacement.
There are 2,48,000 street lamps across the city. Of all these, the ones in areas like Adyar, Kodambakkam, and Alandur in the south Chennai had got badly affected. Most houses in Padmanabha Nagar, Adyar saw water entering their houses.
There were no streetlights at least for five days. Once the rain subsided and power was restored, there were a few lights working, said H. Vembu, the secretary of Residents’ Welfare Association.
Residents of T.Nagar said they were able to see lights during rainy days only from the torch lights used by rescue men. The fear starts when it turns to be 5 pm as it will begin to get dark. There were scary noises of heavy rain, said a man who got stuck in his workplace at G.N.Chetty Road. I have never experienced such a condition in T. Nagar. Now, the lights are back as usual including the LED lights on Usman Road flyover, he adds.
Those belonging to areas where streetlights are not yet restored may contact the division engineers or seek help from corporation at 1913.
