Floods cause surge in helmet sale

Posted on: 19/Dec/2015 12:06:45 PM
While motorists are forced to get their vehicles repaired due to damage faced in recent floods, there is one more need for them to spend money on. It is to buy new helmets. The practice of locking helmets with the bikes holds all the credit. This has damaged all their headgears during the rain.

The linings of helmets have developed fungus which is one of the main reasons for motorists to throw them away and opt for new ones.

People stepping in back to back for purchasing helmet at shops in G.P. Road and Anna Salai is evident of the increase in need for purchase. Mohamed who owns a helmet shop alongside Anna Salai, close to Thousand Lights, says there is going to be not any increase in helmet rates as it happened in July and August 2015.

With the Madras High Court making wearing of helmets compulsory from July 1, the traffic police was booking more than 1,000 cases every day, during that time, which pushed up the sale of helmets

Speaking about this, a traffic police official said the enforcement of helmet rule is now relaxed after the onset of monsoon. They have got other problems to attend, he added. Traffic pileups caused by water stagnation on roads is their major focus at present.
Helmet rule will be made stringent again after the city gets back to normalcy completely.
