Lakes not filled up in spite of heavy rains

Posted on: 19/Dec/2015 11:06:42 AM
Though rains have caused havoc in the lives of Chennaites, there was one solace. That is drinking water because water levels in the reservoirs and lakes were up to the brim.

Now the sad part is Of the nearly 917 lakes in Kancheepuram district, 47 waterbodies have not reached their full capacity even though several areas in the district received heavy spells of rain varying from 30 cm to 49 cm on December 1 alone. The waterbodies in Pallavaram, Nandivaram, Mannivakkam, Irumbuliyur and Peerkankaranai are among those that have water less than 50 per cent of their capacity.

Residents had earlier requested officials to ensure the de-silting of water-carrying channels, but in vain. They have now urged the State government to provide more funds for de-silting the water-carrying channels.
