Cuddalore sets up first of its kind emergency radio station

Posted on: 18/Dec/2015 6:20:37 PM
An emergency radio station, the first of its kind, has been set up in Cuddalore. The station will connect people during natural disasters. 107.8 FM will go on air from the District Collectorate. It will connect people between a distance radius of 20 kms. People who have any device, including cell phones will be able to access the station.

Cuddalore has been hit by natural disasters in the recent past. In 2004, the tsunami killed over 600 people in the district. In 2011, the district was badly hit by the Cyclone Thane. And last month, over 68 people died due to the floods.

Speaking about the radio station, the Cuddalore District Collector said, The radio will help prepare for any disaster in advance so as to save human and property loss. During natural calamities power could go. But this FM radio would run in power back-up and people can receive it in ordinary FM devices and even on mobile phones.

An NGO, Saranalayam, will run the station with volunteers. The people of Cuddalore district are happy with the initiative. We suffered a lot during the recent floods as we weren`t warned adequately. This could be useful. Many people who travelled in my auto too liked it, they say.
