A study conducted by the American Chemical Society has said that eating pomegranates may protect you from neurological disorders, including Alzheimer`s disease. The study was published in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience.

Pomegranates are rich in minerals and vitamins. They are known to have anti inflammatory, anti cancerous and anti oxidant properties. It is also believed that the fruit protects our neurons because of its anti ageing property.

According to the study, compounds in pomegranates called urolithins have neuro protective properties along with anti inflammatory ones. The protective agents in the compounds are called ellagitannins. The agents are produced when the compounds are metabolised by bacteria in the intestines.

The study showed that urolithins lowered the levels of the beta amyloid protein which forms toxic clumps in the neurons. The clumps are associated with Alzheimer`s disease.
