Road restoration on the go

Posted on: 12/Dec/2015 12:24:37 PM
The Highway Department is gearing up subsequent to the stoppage of heavy showers. Workers from the department are in full swing repairing of roads that got washed away in flood and showers.

There were about 40 odd breaches in Kanchipuram and 40 culverts in Tiruvallur. In Kanchipuram, few breaches are so large that about 15 feet of depth of roads have got washed away. Three breaches including Vengachery across Cheyyar River, bed level causeway on Kanchipuram to Vandavasi road across Palar and Vallipuram are pending for repair.

At places like Kunnavakkam near Walajabhad, Salavakkam and Naduvakkarai are being used to fill breaches. The force of water is too high in these places to such an extent that the earth below the tar topping was pushed, say sourced from the highway department.

Engineering teams headed by Superintending Engineers are formed at Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. These teams are working on the repair works. They hold prior experience in dealing with such crisis situations. They have with them enough laborers from their respective districts. Repair works at Kanchipuram are likely to get over by Sunday, said a senior official.

In Thiruvallur, three bridges including one that was constructed pre-independence on Mount Poonamallee-Avadi road are damaged. Motorists need to take the Thiruverkadu route to reach their destinations. Highway department is believed to get these repairing done at the earliest, said a resident of Vanagaram.

A submersible bridge constructed in 1980s at the Muthukonkda Puram on Kanakkamma Chathram to Thiruvalangadu road and a main causeway that was constructed in 2002 along Thiruthani to Nagalapuram road have also got badly damaged leading to traffic diversions.

Reconstruction at these four causeways including three in Thiruvallur and one in Kanchipuram will require a budget of Rs 60 crore. Demands are placed to the government, said sources.

Apart from the damaged caused to Basin Bridge in Vyasarpadi, causeway beneath Ekkatuthangal bidge, there is no other damage reported. Bridges at Kotturpuram and Saidapet are safe, add sources.
