Spastics Society damaged in floods, much of materials lost

Posted on: 12/Dec/2015 11:33:49 AM
The Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu (SPASTN) in Taramani is having a tough time coping with the aftermath of the deluge that hit the city earlier this month. The Society was established in 1981. It educates, trains and employs the disabled. The property in Taramani spans 5 acres and include a school, the human resources department and the administrative block.

Although volunteers are working to get the stagnant water out of the premises, the damage to the organisation is a lot. Much of the resource material and equipment used by the institution has been lost in the floods.

Officials hope to reopen the school next week. On December 1, we worked till 3pm, but left early as it as pouring. The same day, our campus was flooded with water and everything on our ground floor was destroyed. We have about 15 classrooms, and rooms for physiotherapy, speech and language, sensory integration therapy and occupational therapy as well as a hydrotherapy pool and a full-fledged gym not only for therapy but to develop stamina and endurance for children who eventually will go onto open employment. We don`t have the soft cushioned therapy mattresses, which are used, especially for babies. The individualized learning material we had developed for each child or group is also all gone. We still need desktop computers, tables and chairs, adjustable storage shelves, at least 10 therapy mats, first aid material, hand washes and even bleaching powder.
