There are several two wheelers that have got damaged due to heavy downpour of northeast monsoon in Chennai. Four wheelers like cars that were parked outside houses have also got submerged in water and have got damaged.

If these are to be repaired and functioned again, it may cost in thousands! Those who have insured their vehicles will be eligible for claim. There are two types of insurance schemes in general. They are comprehensive and 3rd party insurance.

Vehicles will be eligible for claim if they have got affected by such natural calamities like fire, flood, earthquake, etc if the insurer has taken a full insurance. Only then will the vehicle be eligible for insurance claim.

Out of 1.50 crore vehicles that are insured in Tamil Nadu, 60 lakh are from Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur. Just 30 lakh of these is fully insured.

So far, Orients insurance has received claim application for 20 motorbikes, 30 cars and 10 goods vehicles. Further, applications are also sent to other 25 insurance companies.

The rules for applying for insurance claim is rolled out by the insurance companies. The vehicle that is damaged need to be taken to the workshop. The damage will be inspected by the mechanic and provide an estimate cost for repairing the vehicle.

This should be taken to the insurance company where a claim form will be provide. This should be filled and submitted along with estimation given by the mechanic.

An inspector will then be sent by the insurance company. He will perform inspection on the vehicle. On providing a report on damage, the insurance company will insist handing over the vehicle to them for repair, or it can also be repaired at other places wherever the owners wishes. Following this, the insurance provider will give out the insurance claim amount based on the year of purchase of vehicle.

However, there are information that the private insurance companies have decided not to provide claim amount for vehicles damaged in the rain. They have started sending out SMS to vehicle owners insisting to refrain from use of cars in the rain. This has left the policy owners perplex whether they will receive the claim amount or not.

If the vehicle gets started at the centre of inspection, the claim will not be obtained. Furthermore, the claim amount will be given only to those who are promptly paying the insurance premium. If the claim is not provided, the policy holder may approach solution centre and share their concerns.
