Prithika Yashini - The First Transgender SI

Posted on: 06/Nov/2015 4:47:24 PM
K Prithika Yashini from Chennai will soon become the first transgender Sub Inspector of Police.

The Madras High Court has declared her as a fit candidate and allowed the Tamil Nadu government to appoint her as the Sub Inspector. Further, the court has also ordered the recruitment board to make changes so as to invite transgenders to the state police force.

About Prithika Yashini

She was born and brought up as Pradeep Kumar. She completed her graduation in Computer Applications and following a sex change surgery, she got her name changed as Prithika. Her life has been hectic since then.

When she initially applied for the position, her application got rejected as the third gender category was not included at the state police recruitment board. No quota or concessional cut off in written exam, physical fitness test or interview was provided for transgenders.

Prithika did not turn down her move and remained relentless. She filed a series of writ petitions which ended up bringing down the cut off marks from 28.5 to 25 for her. She also got qualified in physical tests. She was late by one second in the 100 meters dash which was also acceptable.

She says she is super excited about this. This is an entirely new opportunity for all transgender, says Prithika who aims at becoming an IPS officer.

Her case was handled by advocate Bhavani. She had earlier handled similar cases for other transgenders to get placed in government jobs. This order is sure to pave way for more such transgenders to have wider opportunities.

The government of Tamil Nadu has opened up ways for transgenders to step into colleges. However, the opportunity for them in government jobs had been elusive. There are a few transgenders who work as Home Guards in Madurai. These jobs fetch them with daily wages, to note.
