Last year Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced that under the slum-free cities programme, over 10,000 apartments will be built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in Chennai and other cities at a cost of Rs.825 crore. The Central Government will provide 50 per cent of the project cost, the State 40 per cent and the beneficiaries 10 per cent. The apartments will be of 400 sq ft with fans and lights. The construction work was supposed to be started after getting clearance from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).
Since CMDA has given clearance, it has been decided to build 5000 houses in the first phase. After constructing independent houses, apartments and special apartments, they will be sold by drawing lots. By sales, the Slum Clearance Board will get Rs 20 Crores.
