The Coast Guard on Saturday organized a walkathon at the Marina Beach in Chennai to spread awareness about increasing pollution in the environment.
Around 2,000 people participated in the walkathon and among the participants were the families of Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force, NCC Cadets, school children and others.
"Along the Marina Beach today, almost about 2,000 people have participated to convey a message to keep not only the area around the beach and the marina clean, but the entire city, as in the times to come it will be the environment which shall be ensuring a clean and good living for our generation, and hence Coast Guard feels proud to be part of this endeavour to convey a message to Chennai and Chennai people," said S. P. Sharma, Inspector General of Coast Guard, Coast Guard Region-East.
The chief guest at the event, Latika Saran, Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, said that such events were required for the betterment of the city and the citizens.
The walkathon was conducted by the Coast Guard as a part of their anniversary celebration on February 1.
