Fortis to establish Speciality Medical Centres for Patients with Diabetes

In a strategic move, Fortis Healthcare Ltd. India’s fastest growing chain of hospitals announced its foray into Speciality Medical Centres focused on the management of diabetes, metabolic diseases and endocrinology. These standalone centres will help expand Fortis’s reach  and capacity to meet the rising demand for quality healthcare services The Speciality centre will  offer holistic therapies and also develop support programmes to  improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with  diabetes and other metabolic diseases. 
 
The centres will provide comprehensive care catering to Renal, Ophthalmic, Neurological, Cardiac, and Metabolic ailments emanating from Diabetes. Such centres will offer the entire gamut of diabetes services which include treatment of adult diabetes, gestational diabetes and pre-conception planning, young onset diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic foot, dialysis; facility for continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump, hyperbaric oxygen therapy for food ulcers, and laser photocoagulation. These centres will also have speciality services for obesity & weight loss, thyroid diseases, bone & calcium disorders, women’s hormonal disorders, men’s health and sexual problems, growth and hormonal disorders in children, cholesterol and lipid disorders, special diets & nutrition therapy and brain related endocrine disorders. Apart from these, the centres will also provide value-added services including a Diabetic Helpline, Executive screening, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation, and Nutrition advice and Diabetic appliances.
 
Diabetes is a multi-factorial disease reaching alarming proportions in India owing to a combination of poor lifestyles, sedentary habits, stress, limited exercise, lack of awareness and a genetic pre-disposition. About 12-17 percent of the urban population and 3-8 percent of the rural population of the country is afflicted with this disease. An estimated 51 million people are battling diabetes in the country today and India is likely to be home to about 80 million diabetics by 2030. In Delhi alone, nearly 37% of people are either suffering from diabetes or pre-diabetes.
 
An SPV (“Fortis C-DOC Healthcare Private Limited”) has been floated for the purpose in an affiliation with Professor Anoop Misra who will be the Executive Chairman of the Company. Professor Misra is an internationally acclaimed diabetes expert and researcher and has been a member of many National and International policy and decision-making bodies in Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Cardiovascular diseases. He is a Dr. B C Roy awardee, the highest award for medicine in India and a recipient of the Padma Shri. Previously, he has served as Head of the Deparment of Internal Medicine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and as faculty in Endocrinology and Medicine at University of Texas, USA.

The company will have an integrated approach to  clinical services, training and research. It will leverage the existing tie-ups and linkages that Fortis and Professor.. Misra already have with leading universities andnd organisations all over the world. The stem-cell therapy trial for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers that is already being undertaken by Professor Misra at Fortis Hospitals will continue in these centres. These centres will have research and academic collaborations with many advanced centres of diabetes and metabolic diseases in USA, UK, Australia etc.
