Posted on: 15/Apr/2015 1:03:03 PM
There are complaints now that many colleges do not show keen interest in the Tamil Nadu Government scheme for economically weaker students. In this scheme the poor students are sent to foreign countries to pursue higher studies. The professors state that since many colleges do not show keen interest in this programme,  the poor students miss this rare opportunity.

The last date for the year 2015-2016 to enrol in this scheme is over but more than 40 Government Colleges have not submitted the applications.

The study abroad programme is a fully funded scheme of Tamil Nadu State Government. It is a unique programme to support students from Government Colleges and Universities especially from the lower economic and social background from across Tamil Nadu to study one semester in the UK. Tamil Nadu government will fund 25 postgraduate students in Physical, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Business, Computer Sciences, IT, Management from public funded state universities to spend one semester at an UK university starting September 2015. In addition, Tamil Nadu Government will also fund 5 faculty members to spend a semester in the UK University either doing a CPD or faculty development programme or a short research project.

This programme is undertaken by The Higher Education sector of Tamil Nadu. The circular will be sent to all government colleges during the month of March. The colleges should select the best student and send his application to Tamil Nadu Higher Education department. The selected students will be sent to British Council to undergo IELTS training. If they are selected they will be sent to UK for further studies. So far 50 poor students and 10 professors have been benefited under this program.
