LPG distributors and dealers cannot force consumers to buy gas stoves and tubes

There are many occasions where the gas agencies force their consumers to buy gas stoves and accessories. Now this cannot be done because the Madras High Court on Thursday closed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought direction to restrain LPG distributors and dealers of oil companies from forcing consumers to purchase materials like gas stoves and tubes while applying for new gas connections.
When the petition moved by Coimbatore Consumer Voice, came up for hearing before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh, the respondents, Hindustan Petroleum, Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum submitted that necessary remedial steps were taken and instructions already been issued to dealers.
Further, the counsel for the oil companies submitted that the copy of instructions issued to the dealers will be handed over to the counsel for the petitioner.
