Madras high court on Monday has decreed that a pass in the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET) to be the mandatory for the posts of Assistant Professor Posts in colleges.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice M Yusuf Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, dismissed the  writ petitions and appeals filed by candidates stating that The regulation and the decision of the central government  making the NET/SLET) mandatory is not  illegal, arbitrary or whimsical. The bench observed that the decision is rational and based on public interest and also national policy to upgrade the standard of education in the country.

Again Government should also be aware that the entrance exams after qualifications, questioning the institution of examinations especially it is made eligibility to joining the jobs. It will only affect the poor people who are waiting to earn for their living immediately after their degrees. It will be more prudent make on job training mandatory for further continuance. The concept of CAIIB for bank staff can be followed. It should be left to the institutes to recruit right people and UGC‘s mechanism controlling the institutes on quality of faculty should more stringent.
