There was a good response for this scheme amongst the people. The Department of Posts had organized the camps for opening accounts on two Sundays March 22 and 29. On these two Sundays, 13 thousand 500 accounts were opened under this scheme in Chennai Division alone.

Postmaster general Mervin Alexander said, Of the 3.96 lakh accounts opened in the Tamil Nadu postal circle since the launch of the scheme in January, the highest in the country, 1.49 lakh accounts (Rs 56 crore in deposits) were in Chennai. The scheme has evoked a massive response and  there had been a steady stream of visitors to post offices across the city, including in suburban areas such as Tambaram, over the past few days.Tamil Nadu Postal circle had targeted schools and anganwadi centres to promote the scheme launched exclusively for girl children by the Centre.

The Department of Posts  has launched Selvamagal Semipu, a new deposit scheme for the girl child.

The department has started this scheme exclusively for girls below 10 years of age. Parents or guardians can deposit up to Rs. 1.5 lakh a year in this scheme, which provides an interest rate of 9.1 per cent.

The scheme allows customers to pay in multiples of Rs. 100, and the deposit amount need not be a constant every month. While the account can be closed only after the account-holder turns 21, the amount can be partially withdrawn for reasons including higher education, when the account-holder is 18 years old.

The new scheme, referred to as Sukanya Samriddhi in other states, will be available at all post offices.
