Rail fares will not be reduced: Railway Minister Suresh Babu

Posted on: 30/Jan/2015 12:43:39 PM
Railway Minister Suresh Babu said that there was no chance of reducing the rail fares though the diesel prices have come down. In the wake of a physically challenged man being "thrashed" by RPF personnel at Howrah station near Kolkata, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu  while speaking to the media in Bangalore said, “We have given strict instructions to Railway Police Force that they cannot misbehave with passengers. We have asked them to deal with them in most courteous and human manner. If anybody is found misbehaving with them, we will take serious action against them.”

When asked the Minister that whether the rail fare will be reduced, he hinted that there may not be any cut in train fares in spite of the fall in diesel prices. He said, “Actually, the Railways recover only 50 per cent of the passenger cost they bear. So, there is already a huge element of subsidy (and passengers are getting benefits as passenger fare is subsidized).”
