As per the prevailing rules, non-resident Indians living abroad will have to visit India and cast the vote if he/she wants to participate in the election. This condition makes it rather impossible for lakhs of non-resident Indians to cast their votes.

Today (Monday, 12th January), the Supreme Court has ordered the central government to facilitate the e-voting or e-ballot method of postal voting for all non-resident Indians.

This will enable around 1 Crore non-resident Indians living in foreign countries to cast their votes.

The order was issued by the Supreme Court after the central government submitted that it approves this as recommended by the election commission.

Once the law is enacted, action will be initiated to facilitate e-ballot process. The Supreme Court has ordered that the facility should be completed as immediately as possible.

Once implemented, the voters’ cards will be sent to the non-resident Indian through email. The voter can make his choice and the send the same back to the election officer of the relevant constituency.
