Chennai has been placed under increased alert with the police taking preventive steps to avert any form of violence or terror in the wake of terrorist attacks in Pakistan and Australia,

Speaking on the preparedness of the city, Deputy Commissioner P Saravana, said, `Police patrolling has already been intensified and vigilance has been increased at possible targets such as malls and schools. Alert messages are being constantly passed on between officials.`

`Educational institutions run by the Central government, such as the Kendriya Vidyala schools, are being given an extra blanket of security. Other schools in the city are also under the police radar`, he explained.

Further, he stated that each district has special anti-terror teams, which are in the process of collecting `intelligence inputs`. These teams are reported to be checking vulnerable spots such as market places and other commercial establishments for possible terror activity.

Heads of schools are reported to be feeling the heat to ensure the safety and security of their students.

It has also been reported that the neighboring city Bengaluru has been put under high alert after a threat was issued by unidentified persons this morning.
