A free dental screening camp got off to a start in Coimbatore on Thursday, which is to set a Guinness Records for Maximum number of people for oral health problems in 24 hours. The camp is organized by The Indian Dental Association (IDA), Coimbatore Branch.

The existing record of 3,500 persons in 24 hours was set by IDA`s headquarters in Mumbai in October last year. As many as 150 dentists took part in that camp. The Coimbatore camp has already surpassed that record in the first three hours of the camp that started at 8 a.m. with just 48 dentists according to honorary secretary of the Coimbatore Branch of IDA R. Saravanan.

The camp only screens people, free of charge; Procedures will be done only at the hospitals of the 48 dental surgeons who are members of the IDA. A handbill containing the photos, names and phone numbers of the surgeons are issued to those screened at the camp. People can post screening, get in touch with the Dental surgeons of their choice for follow-up and further treatment. Removal of tooth and filling would be done free of cost. The other procedures such as root canal treatment would have to be paid for.

Oral care products manufacturers Oral B teamed up with IDA for the free camp that screened 18,638 people of multiple age groups by 6 p.m. “More than 12,000 students, including those from the schools of the Coimbatore Corporation were screened by 2.30 p.m.,” Dr. Saravanan said.

The final figure would be released on completion of the camp on Friday. Dr. Saravanan said the Coimbatore Branch already held the record of screening 1.32 lakh school students in a month. “This is a national record and it was achieved in October 2002,” he said.

“As for the ongoing camp, apart from creating a record, we want to create awareness on oral health in a big way,” he said.

The Corporation teamed up with the IDA to have the students of its schools screened.
