Metropolitan magistrate courts of Egmore will function in Moore Market Complex from December

Madras high court has given consent to the Chennai Corporation’s offer of its second and third floors of Moore Market Complex near Central railway station. This comes with a tag of monthly rent of 17.79 lakh.

The government has sanctioned 22.21 crore for the preservation and maintenance of the heritage court buildings at Egmore, George Town and Saidapet, besides Court of Small Causes in the Madras HC premises. The renovation will begin after the courts are shifted. “The local body has to make alterations to make it suitable for the courts to function,” an HC official said.

The Chennai Corporation is currently carrying out alterations to the Lily Pond complex after demolishing shops on the second and third floors, but is unlikely to remove shops that obstruct the entry of fire tenders.

“We have completed civil works in 12 court halls and the main chamber. Painting and flooring work will be completed soon. Fourteen courts will start functioning on the Moore Market premises from December. Shops around the complex will not be shifted,” said a Corporation official.

Following security concerns raised by the police, officials are likely to commission facilities for improving security in the complex. The civic body is, however, yet to create parking space for the courts.
