The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur here would start producing stainless steel coaches from this year and expects to make over 1,000 coaches over the next three fiscals, a senior official said here today.

ICF General Manager Ashok K Agarwal told reporters, "We would be switching over to stainless steel coaches from this year. In fact, we would switch over in the next five years. This year we are planning to make 75 stainless steel coaches. We will also be introducing bi-directional swing doors for all AC coaches. The railway board has requested us to work on the design and we have submitted it. This would allow passengers to exit easily in case of emergency.

At present, doors in AC coaches open only inwards. For the existing coaches the swing doors will be retrofitted at the maintenance workshop. The process will begin in six months.

Addressing the media here, he said ICF would make over 300 stainless steel coaches in the next fiscal and over 600 coaches in fiscal following that.

Set up in 1955 with Swiss collaboration, ICF functions is a premier production unit of Indian Railways manufacturing passenger coaches and was established for the manufacture of light weight, all steel and all welded `Integral` coaches.
