Irregular menstrual cycle & confusion in maternity delivery date!!

Posted on: 12/Sep/2014 2:44:32 PM
In order to rightly calculate the date of delivery, it is very essential to know the exact date of the last menstrual period. Add 7 more days to this date. Now take 3 months back from this date – you will get the date of delivery.

Example – If the last menstrual period date was 1st May, adding 7 days gives 8th May. Now, going back by 3 months gives 8th February. 8th February is the expected date of delivery.

This calculation is valid for the women who have menstrual cycle every 28/32 days.  For women with irregular menstrual cycle, it is advisable to take the urine test to confirm conception and then take a scan within 45 days.  This will confirm whether the foetus grows in the womb or not. If this can is taken before the commencement of heartbeat for the child, it is possible to check the growth of the foetus & then arrive at the date of delivery.

Generally, the pregnancy period is estimated to be 280 days. It is rather problematic and suspenseful if one does not know the expected calculated date of delivery. The umbilical cord stops functioning after a particular period. This is the vital life link between the mother & the child. It is dangerous if this umbilical cord stops functioning. Hence, it is strongly advised that women with irregular menstrual cycle should take all the necessary extra care once pregnancy is confirmed.
