Chennaites can be cheerful since there will be rain

Chennaites may have some cheer as temperatures may dip. On Thursday morning, too, Chennai recorded 1 cm of rainfall and Tambaram received 3 cm. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degree Celsius, nearly one degree less than normal temperature.

The consistent showers have helped in bridging the shortfall in rains this season. Officials of the meteorological department said the city is mainly receiving rains in the evenings because of convective clouds.

S.R. Ramanan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said, “Chennai usually has thunderstorms during the southwest monsoon. The number of rainy days increases to nine in August. But, we may not have uniform rains everywhere.”

Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam have so far registered 23 cm and 25 cm of rainfall, respectively, nearly 3 cm more than what is normally received in the period from June 1. The department expects a slight increase in rainfall in the next few days.
